Many Paths but One Goal

JUST as varieties of yoga exist, so do styles of facial acupuncture, each with a different emphasis.

MEI ZEN This system, developed by Martha Lucas and Denise Ellinger in 2003, uses shallow needling techniques with Korean face and hand needles. A treatment plan may also include herbs, qigong exercises and burning the herb mugwort to stimulate qi. Find a practitioner at www.cosmeticacupunctureseminars.com.

CONSTITUTIONAL FACIAL In 2000, Mary Elizabeth Wakefield created this style based on traditional Chinese medicine. Her spa-like approach uses a few Japanese needles all over the body. www.chiakra.com/referrals.htm.

FACIAL REJUVENATION Virginia Doran, who trained Mary Elizabeth Wakefield, has done facial acupuncture for 13 years. Her approach uses many Japanese needles at once for better results, she says. www.luminousbeauty.com.

ACUPUNCTURE WITH MICROCURRENTS This style incorporates microcurrent stimulation on acupuncture points to supposedly rejuvenate the muscles. Some practitioners don’t even use needles, believing that gentle electrical currents can have the same effect as needles; www.eastwestmed.com or www.peterhansonmd.com
